
Aligarh, September 14: Dr. Aasiya Islam, an alumna of Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Women’s College, has been appointed as a permanent Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at the globally renowned London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), London.
In 2009, Dr. Islam graduated with a BA (Honours) in Communicative English from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at AMU’s Women’s College, securing top marks. She was awarded the prestigious Zakir Husain Medal for Academic Excellence. During her undergraduate studies, she chose Women’s Studies as a subsidiary subject and actively participated in the academic activities of the Women’s Studies Centre.
Subsequently, she completed her Master’s degree in Gender, Media, and Culture with distinction at LSE, where she was also honoured with the Best Degree Performance Award. Following this, she pursued a PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge on the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship.
After her fellowship at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, and her tenure as a lecturer at the University of Leeds, Dr. Islam has now joined LSE as an Assistant Professor. With this achievement, she becomes the first graduate from AMU to be appointed as an Assistant Professor at the world-renowned LSE.
AMU Vice Chancellor Professor Naima Khatoon congratulated Dr. Islam on her remarkable accomplishment, stating that her appointment at LSE will inspire AMU students to pursue higher education abroad and strive for academic careers in prestigious international universities.
